He raised the callof the joyous winter and in responseto his appeal in The Dartmouth of Jan-uary 9, 1910, some fifty men, eager toescape the tedium of both work and playbehind bolts, drew up articles of organ-ization, signed them, and elected the loneski-runner, F. H. Harris, president andfirst leader of the venture. Within threeyears, the club had gained a seat in theCollege Council, and its gala day—theWinter Carnival—was settled as an in-stitution. The first president made the club.For two years he routed the lazy out. intothe drifts, maintained a publicity bureaufor the New England and Westernnewspapers, shouldered irksome financialburdens, and never once failed to be onhand to lead the line of Tyros awayfrom Dartmouth Hall. Now, instead ofa timid student or two and a few lone-some tracks in the snow, he sees a wholecollege out on trail. Theclub was fortunate in having such in-struction. Snowshoe as well as ski run-ning in isolated districts is a serious busi-ness. It is rather grim humor to bestranded with a broken ski or snowshoetwelve miles from the nearest assistancewith a pack on your back, four feet ofsnow beneath you, and the thermometerten or twelve degrees below zero. Itrequires a strong man and a resourcefulone to keep a band of novices on themarch when through cold, exposure, andhunger they are ready to lie down and goto sleep.
