Due to the isolated location of the Lakes, abouteighty miles across the mountains to thetowns in Amador and fifty miles to Car-son, Nevada, there was little floating laborto recruit from, and the crews were se-lected with some care prior to the open-ing of the season. Construction materialwas expensive, as the freight rate fromSan Francisco to Carson was almost equalto that from the East to San Francisco,and the team haul of fifty miles from Car-son further increased the cost. As an in-dication, cement laid down at the Lakescost §8.00 per barrel. This was a deter-mining factor in selecting a type of damsuch as that for Meadow lake, namely dryrock fill.
