In June another estimate was made andthe results of our operations to date werecarefully checked. Again the managementwas assured that we could and would carryour load through the summer without re-course to a reduction. It should not be assumed that we hadunusually good luck, for we had ourtroubles. For instance, flume troubleoccurred at one of our large plants. Farfrom being dismayed or discouraged, how-ever, the reduced local force was volun-tarily augmented by every able-bodied manavailable, whether lineman or clerk, and arecord was established in restoring thisheavy flume structure, one of the heaviestin the West, within sixty hours. Station A, our companys great steam-electric generating station at the Potrero, SanFrancisco; there the aggregate generator installed capacity is 85,781 horsepower Pacific Service Magazine 43 following the failure of a division wall, aboiler was taken out of service, the liningand division wall replaced and connected tothe steam line within twenty-two hours.Somebody worked within the boiler whenthe temperature must have been almost un-bearable. Yet the work was accomplishedand no ill eftects were suffered. It affordedan instance of efficiency and the use of goodsound common sense and care, all of whichmay be considered as a part of the dayswork, typifying the earnestness of everyman concerned. Similar instances in other lines could berecounted, such as desperate battling withthe unusually prevalent forest fires, floun-dering around in the marshes fighting hightension line troubles during the very heavyfog conditions, and so on.
