d:—Nothing inthis act contained shall be construed as to interfere with religiousinstruction in any private, denominational or parochial school. Section 4. Powers of Owner or Groverning Board of Pri-vate Schools:—For the purpose of this act the owner or governingboard of any private school, or denominational or parochial schoolshall have authority to select and purchase text books, equipmentand supplies, to employ teachers and to have and exercise the gen-eral management of the school, subject to the provisions of thisact. Section 5. Patriotic Studies and Exercises in Schools:—All public, private, denominational or parochial schools shall givein the proper grades such courses in American History and inCivil Government, both State and National, as will give the pupilstherein a thorough knowledge of the history of our country andits institutions and of our form of government and shall conductsuch patriotic exercise as may be prescribed from time to time bythe State Superintendent.

Inspection of Private Schools by County Super-intendent :—The County Superintendent of the County, or theCity Superintendent of the City, where any private, denominationalor parochial schools are located, shall inspect such schools andreport to the proper officers any evidence of the use of any textbooks or of any activities, instruction or propaganda thereinsubversive of American institutions and republican form of govern-ment or good citizenship or of failure to observe any of theprovisions of this act. Section 7. Failure of Private Schools to Comply withAct.:—Consequences In case any private denomina-tional or parochial school after a final determination by properauthorities under this act fails, refuses or neglects to conform toand comrply therewith, no person shall be granted or allowed a cer-tificate to teach therein and the pupils attending such schoolor schools be required to attend the pub
