Summary[edit]
DescriptionPanicum queenslandicum spikelet14 NWS - Flickr - Macleay Grass Man.jpg |
Native warm-season perennial densely tufted C4 grass; stems are erect to semi-erect and grow to 80 cm tall. Ligules are a 1 mm long row of hairs. Flowerheads are open panicles to 28 cm long; branches are stiffly and widely spreading, the lower ones whorled. Spikelets are rather few in number, sparsely arranged, 2-flowered, 3-7 mm long and pale to purplish; lower glume is 75-95% of the spikelet’s length; lower lemma is sterile; upper lemma is smooth and shiny. Flowers in summer. Usually grows on areas subject to flooding in the Upper Hunter, Northwest Slopes and along the adjacent Plains. Native biodiversity. Not very tolerant of grazing, it is mostly found in ungrazed or lightly grazed situations; however it is a pioneer species that can also become abundant after overgrazing or drought. Not highly palatable, but produces a fair bulk of feed. |
