Summary[edit]

Author
Charles Joseph Hullmandel; James Duffield Harding
Description
English: Part of Greenwich Hospital from the Ravensbourne

A view from between Greenwich and Deptford, over the Ravensbourne (Deptford Creek). It appears to show the original Wren west wing of the King Charles Court, which was rebuilt to John Yenn's design in 1812-15 although this print must be somewhat later. Although it is from inland, the orientation is such as to show the King William dome to the right of that on the Queen Mary Court, i.e. practically due east from close to the Thames. It also shows the market-garden nature of the Deptford area before it was built over, with workers picking vegetables in the field and cows beyond. It may be a plate from 'Britannia Delineata...' (1822) to which Harding was one of several contributors, but of which only the first part was ever published, covering views of notable buildings and picturesque scenery in Kent. See also PAH3273 (apparently another copy) and PAF7635.
