Summary[edit]
DescriptionPath in Hackfall Wood - geograph.org.uk - 638643.jpg |
English: Path in Hackfall Wood The PROW path near the northern end of the Hackfall estate. This whole area was purchased by John Aislaby of Studley Royal in 1731 for £906 and was landscaped by him and his son William, who turned the woodland into a 'beautiful wilderness'. Turner painted scenes here and William Wordsworth described the area in a guide written in 1810. In the 19th century a visit to Hackfall would be the premier excursion for gentlefolk staying in Harrogate or Ripon. The area is a SSSI and regarded as a notable example of ancient woodland. It came under the care of the Woodland Trust in 1989 and restoration work is under way. |
