Summary

[edit]
Description
English: PenTop slate quarry, Porthgain A massive cavity above the village, gradually filling with vegetation. It was the first quarry to be opened at Portgain in the 1850s, to add to the slate then being extracted at Abereiddi. However as the workings sank deeper it became an increasingly slow and laborious to get the slate out and down to the harbour: for every 8 tons of material that was removed only 1 tons of usable slate was obtained. There was also the problem of pumping out water. By the end of the century a tunnel was driven through the hill from the wharf to enable stone and water to come directly out of the quarry.
