Keziah fancied he detected astrong smack of sulphureous vapour. The same night, Keziah, sitting by his fire, dozedoff into a quiet sleep—for the last two nights hadbeen too troubled to give him any real rest. Hewoke with a start as the clock struck twelve; thecandle had burnt down into its socket, and the lastcurl of smoke was ascending from the wick : but themoon was shining brightly, and Keziah had justmade up his mind for economical reasons toretire to bed by its light, when he saw a strangeblack shadow projected on the blind. He coulddistinguish a head, and from it rose two —what?Heaven help the poor lost creature, surely they werenot horns ! The door rattled—the latch clicked, and abovethe loud beating of his own heart, Keziah couldhear the breathing of that fearful visitant! Heremembered that, contrary to his usual custom, hehad forgotten to slide the bolt; the Devil—it couldbe none but he —would enter and carry him offbodily! Shaking in every limb, his heart thumping
