Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Pentrich Revolution plaque This marks one of the sites associated with the revolution of 1817.

According to Wikipedia, "the Pentrich Revolution, . . . occurred on the night of 9/10 June 1817. A gathering of some two or three hundred men (stockingers, quarrymen and iron workers), led by Jeremiah Brandreth ('The Nottingham Captain'), (an unemployed stockinger, and claimed by Gyles Brandreth as an ancestor), set out to march to Nottingham. They were lightly armed with pikes, scythes and a few guns, and had a set of rather unfocussed revolutionary demands, including the wiping out of the National Debt." The march only reached as far as Giltbrook SK4845 where it fizzled out when confronted by a force of just 20 soldiers.
