Петр Федорович изображен в офицерском мундире лейб-драгунского полка Голштинских войск с орденом святого Андрея Первозванного (лента и звезда). Екатерина Алексеевна - с орденом святой Екатерины Большого креста (лента, крест и звезда).

В Каталоге 1980 - Гроот Г.-К. Датирован 1740-ми.

Впервые портрет был воспроизведен в 1866 в "Galerie de la Maison des Romanoff" (St. Petersburg. - 1974 - no 34), но без указания автора. В 1894 в Энциклопедическом словаре Брокгауза и Ефрона (СПб. - 1894. - Т. 18. - С. 773) в статье о художнике, подписанной инициалами А. С., портрет приписывается Г.-К. Грооту. На Таврической выставке экспонировался как работа Г.-К. Гроота (Петербург 1905; Кат. Таврической выст., № 334, 335**). А.В. Селиванов считает, что „технико-технологические признаки противоречат авторству Г.-К. Гроота" (Селиванов 1986***). Авторство Г.-К. Гроота ставит под сомнение и Л.А. Маркина (Маркина 1983****, с. 125). Стилистические признаки, а также отсутствие архивных документов о создании двойного портрета заставляют усомниться в авторстве художника.

В августе 1745 состоялось бракосочетание Петра Федоровича и Екатерины Алексеевны. Вполне вероятно, что парный портрет был написан именно в этом году как портрет жениха и невесты.
