We were hurrying along the plank walk laid between thetracks to an exit that was nearer than the one through whichwe had entered the tunnel, but the water was rising rapidlyover the track, and, as we splashed on, we missed our footingmore than once where there was a break in the plank walkor where we had to scramble around a stalled car. Once Istepped out on open water and would have gone under com-pletely had not Bill caught me. Bill also had a fall or two,and even Halliday stumbled and fell across the track.
