The Carambola, a Favorite Fruit of Southern China. (Averrhoa CARAMBOLA L.; S. P. I. NOS. 55651 AND 55652.) The peculiar winged fruits of the carambola are highly acid in character and are eate n by theChinese with fish, meats, and other foods. When fully ripe they are deep yellow and sweetenough to be eaten out of hand, though they are not greatly relished in this form. The treecan be grown successfully in southern Florida, but it is too tender for cultivation in otherparts of the United States. (MlCHELIA EXCELSA As ornamental plants for the warmer portions of the United States the various species ofmagnolias have acquired great and well-deserved popularity, and it may be expected thatMichelia cxcelsa, which belongs to the same family and whose handsome flowers are hereshown, will some day be widely cultivated in the southernmost parts of this country. Thistall tree is native in the temperate Himalayas of northeastern India at altitudes of about5,000 feet.
