Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Plenum Chamber of The Oast House, Museum of Kent Life. The plenum chamber was the lower part of the kiln. A fire was lit and heat rose through a slatted floor and horsehair sheet above to drying floor where the hops spread evenly about 3 to 4 foot deep.

After building square kilns for over 100 years, in the 1830's round kilns started to be built as they were thought to be more efficient as the hops in corners of square kiln supposedly did not dry as evenly. By the latter 1800's this was disproved, or techniques were improved, and square kilns became the fashion once again, though in larger sizes, up to 20 feet span internally.

This round oast kiln is the last working coal fired kiln.
