t, the inequalities ofwhich are the result of the erosion or excavation of valleys and ravines by thestreams of water- A ridge or rather a sweel of the ground forms the dividebetween the waters flowing north into Lake Erie and those flowing south intothe Ohio river. Near the 40th parallel extends a belt of hills from east to west,through the middle of the state, abounding in highly picturesques scenery. To-ward the south the valleys cut out by the streams grow deeper and deeper, untilthey reach the valley of the Ohio river, which is several hundred feet below thegeneral level of the state. The surface of that part of the state which liesnorth of the watershed is generally level, and has a gentle inclination towardthe lake.
