The bird is supposedby Mazois to typify some singer, or musician, such as itmight be customary to introduce to amuse tlie guests: wehave no more plausible conjecture to offer. The picture isnot complete : a second bird, and on the opposite side a childplaying with a dog, had perished before Mazois copied it. The Danciiig Taun. in general not equal to those from Herculaneum, deserve apassing word of notice. Some of the smaller bronzes fromPompeii especially are unsurpassed for character and vigourof execution. Such, particularly, is the statuette of theDancing Faun, found in the house to which it gave name.Nothing can exceed the vigour and animation with which the POMPEIAN AET. 297 figure is executed, as will be seen from the annexed engraving.It is bearded, and has the horns and tail of a goat. Anoaken garland with acorns, some of which seem to havefallen from their shells, encircles his head, and proclaims hissylvan charr.cter. His attitudes display all the animatedgestures of a drunken dance. His wide-spread arms seem toaccompany the movements of his feet, and he snaps his fingersfor joy.
