h jewelry. She wears a ruff of deli-cate lace and needlework of cobweb-like texture. Her blondhair is dressed with precious stones and surmounted with acrown; about her neck are more jewels. The texture of thecostume is truly remarkable, while the face is curiously inthe character as history shows the woman. It is, perhaps,as the portraitist of Queen Elizabeth that Zuccaro is bestremembered, although he led a busy life and was patronizedby some of the greatest of royalty and the nobility, includ-ing Popes Gregory XIII. and Pius IV., Philip II. of Spain, and the Grand Duke of Florence. It is said that Mary,Queen of Scots, sat for him, and he was the founder of thefamous Academy of St. Luke In Rome. No. 288 of the Exhibition of the Royal House of Tudor. Lentby Mrs. Snare. Also described by Freeman M. ODonoghue, F.S.A.,of the Department of Prints, British Museum, in his work, ADescription and Classified Catalogue of Portraits of Queen Eliza-beth, No. 58. Now owned bv Mrs. F. (i. Macomber.

. No. U.ADRIAAN HANNEMAR i6U—1680.Portrait of Lady Dorothy North. Height, 37 inches. Width, 29 inches. BORN at The Hague, a pupil of Ravesteyn, and a greatadmirer of Van Dyck, Hanneman enjoyed a great reputationand patronage in his native town. The success of Van Dyckin London, however, induced him to visit that metropolis, where for sixteen years he had great prosperity, paintingroyalty and the nobility of the day. On returning to Hol-land he became court painter to Mary, Princess of Orange, and a director of the Academy. He is represented in thecollections at Hampton Court, the Vienna Gallery, theRotterdam Museum, and that in Frankfort. The Lady North here stands in graceful attitude, holdingbetween her dainty fingers the ends of a diaphanous lacescarf. Her hands are painted with rare dexterity, while thedrawing is quite unusual. She is dressed in an eveninggown of white satin, equally excellent in painting, and con-trasting delicately with the flesh tones of a well-proportionedneck
