himself, he was indulgent and considerate to others. In the fulfilment of his public duties, his application was intensely laborious, and his probity without the slightest blemish or imputation; but these estimable qualities were accompanied by a haughtiness of manner, an impatience of contradiction, and a love of domination, which, although they could not deprive him of the admiration due to his character and conduct, prevented him from gaining as many friends ashis virtues and his station would otherwise have surrounded him with.
