Description

New Orleans, Louisiana, 1941. "Aunt Sally's Creole Pralines" shop.

Original caption: "Postcard and candy shop selling souvenirs and praline to tourists. New Orleans, Louisiana"

Notes: Shop was on Royal Street at downtown river corner with St. Louis Street, part of the land vacated with the demolition of the old St Louis Hotel after the Great Hurricane of 1915.
Photo shows shop in rustic-style single story wood architecture, with two mannequins out front dressed in old stereotype "Black Mammy" style. A display of postcards is at left. Signs read "Aunt Sally's Original Creole Pralines - Shipped Everywhere" "Original Creole Pralines - Shipped Everywhere - You can Pay more, But you can't Buy Better Candy". In the street to left is a 4-wheeled carriage hitched to a 2 horse or mule team. The driver sits wearing a top-hat. Behind the open driver's seat is an enclosed portion, on the front of which is a sign reading "Aunt Sally's Original Creole Pralines 500 Royal"; on the side is a "Mammy Doll" caricature.
