s case before (1)and after (2) treatment. The ulcer was about iy2 inches in diam-eter and had been more than two years in forming. It had painedhim considerably, though the pain was never great at any time.No pathological examination was made in this case, for there couldbe no question about the diagnosis. He received thirty x-ray ex-posures, twenty during the first and ten during the last course, al-lowing six weeks to intervene. The second picture (2) was made 280 PRACTICAL ELECTRO-THERAPEUTICS AND X-RAY THERAPY more than a year after the last course of treatment and speaks foritself. There is no sear to mark the location of the ulcer, and theskin is soft and normal. The subject of Fig. 119 was an old Confederate soldier, who hada number of horny epithelial growths on his face, with which he hadbeen afflicted for about twenty years. About ten years before hewas seen an ulcerated area slowly began to form about the noseand on the side of the face. At the time he was seen (1) the nose

Fig. 119.—Cancer of the face. was completely covered with a thick, dense, hyperkeratotic growth, beneath which exuded a mucopurulent discharge. A dense tumor, about 2 inches in diameter and 1% inches thick, was located beneaththe right eye, while a second hard, horny growth was located justto the left of the nose, near the malar eminence. Strange to say, hesuffered little or no pain, and his health was fairly good for a manin this condition and 77 years old. A study was made of the tumoron the right side of the face, and it proved to be epithelioma ofa low grade, which accounted for its slow growth and painlessness.Marsdens paste was used over the large tumor on the right side X-RAY THERAPY 281 of the face, and the remainder of the work was done with the x-ray.He at once improved rapidly, and after twelve months (2) therewas hardly any evidence on the left side of the face of the formertrouble, while on the right side there was a place about the size of adime just over the malar bone
