(4) Direct Sparks.—In giving the direct spark, neither theelectrode nor the prime conductor is grounded. In this modalitythe patient may be made either negative or positive, as in the fore-going methods. In Fig. 26, 1 and 2 illustrate the arrangement of the static ma-chine and patient for the direct static spark. The patient may beconnected with either side of the machine, as before stated, thesame laws holding good in either case. This modality is thoughtto furnish a more vigorous spark, but the author is unable to seeany advantage over the indirect spark method; in fact, he uses theindirect spark exclusively and finds no need for the direct method.The Ley den jars are seldom used when giving any of the modali- ELECTROSTATICS 57 ties mentioned. Should the machine not be working well and thecurrent very weak, the Ley den jars may be used to strengthen thecurrent.
