Fig. 159 is a skiagraph made through the head of a patientwho had lost his right parietal bone in an injury several monthsbefore. There was thought to be a fracture in the occipital bone, X-RAY IN FRACTURES AND DISLOCATIONS 331 but the evidence in the skiagraph was not positive. The lateralskiagraph of the skull gives the best detail, and will generally beall that is required. Good, distinct anteroposterior skiagraphs arealmost impossible to make. In making a skiagraph of the head, the plates should range insize from 8x10 to 11x11 inches. Usually only certain parts of thehead are required, and an 8x10 answers the purpose. The patient

Ablock or box about 5 inches high is placed beneath the head to makeit level. The tube should be of high vacuum, of best quality, andplaced about 18 inches from the plate and directly over the partto be most prominent in the skiagraph. The tube should be ener-gized by a coil of not less than 16-inch spark gap. The length ofexposure will depend upon the apparatus and the tube. From ten 332 PRACTICAL ELECTRO-THERAPEUTICS AND X-RAY THERAPY to thirty seconds should be time enough with modern apparatus.By the use of the sinegran the time may be reduced to the fractionof a second, but the picture loses considerably in distinctness whenmade by this method. Well-directed practice with a good equip-ment will qualify a physician, with a mechanical turn, to do excel-lent work in a reasonable time. FRACTURES AND DISLOCATIONS OF THE LOWEREXTREMITIES.
