. This circuitconsists of two parts, the internal and external. The internal part of the circuit consists of the exciting fluid and thesubmerged part of the elements; while the external part consists of theconducting wires, the non-submerged portion of the elements, and thebody which may be in the circuit. When the circuit is established, the chemical decomposition takesplace at the rod of zinc (which is of a higher potential than the carbon),and makes it a generating plate. Through the electrolyte, electricityflows to the carbon, and through it out of the cell into the conductingmedium, which joins the carbon and the zinc togeth^i;, returning againto the starting point. ^ i ^ ■ • As water flows from a higher to a lower level, so does electricity flowfrom a higher to a lower potential (positive to negative pole); thereforethe outside end of the carbon is positive and the inside end (submergedend) is negative, while the outside end of zinc is negative and the insideend is positive.
