. This circuitconsists of two parts, the internal and external. The internal part of the circuit consists of the exciting fluid and thesubmerged part of the elements; while the external part consists of theconducting wires, the non-submerged portion of the elements, and thebody which may be in the circuit. When the circuit is established, the chemical decomposition takesplace at the rod of zinc (which is of a higher potential than the carbon),and makes it a generating plate. Through the electrolyte, electricityflows to the carbon, and through it out of the cell into the conductingmedium, which joins the carbon and the zinc togeth^i;, returning againto the starting point. ^ i ^ ■ • As water flows from a higher to a lower level, so does electricity flowfrom a higher to a lower potential (positive to negative pole); thereforethe outside end of the carbon is positive and the inside end (submergedend) is negative, while the outside end of zinc is negative and the insideend is positive.

Polarization All cells are subject to polarization; that is, the formation of bubblesof hydrogen upon the carbon, which in that case will also become thegenerating plate and cause the current to flow toward the zinc, thuspartly neutralizing the original flow.
