glasstube was attached to a steel cap having a hole through thecenter three-eighths inches in diameter. Inserted in this centralhole and adjustable was a steel tube. Through the center ofthis steel tube was a small glass tube. The mercury on expand-ing was forced up into the glass tube and came in contact witha fine platinum wire which was adjustable. The mercury onmaking contact with the platinum wire completed an electric cir-cuit which in turn by means of a relay closed the heating cir-cuit. When the mercury dropped, breaking contact with theplatinum wire, the heating circuit was again opened. The ac-companying sketches (see Figures III and IV) show the detailsof this arrangement. The thermostat regulated to .1° C. for anindefinite period and was adjustable to any temperature. The temperatures of A and B were controlled by thermostats.C was similar to A and B except that it had no thermostat andthe heater was connected directly with a rheostat controlled by APPARATUS AND METHOD u
