English: Pumping station and boulder clay cliff
The photograph is taken from Cayton Sands. For another image taken some 150metres south-east from (behind) this viewpoint, click here: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1777356 . The red bricked building (upper left) is the Yorkshire Water Cayton land drainage pumping station. The outfall ( https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1777816 ) is just visible on the stone wall beneath the building. To see a photograph of the rocky foreshore beyond the pumping station, click here https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1777852 . Also beyond the pumping station can be seen the boulder clay cliff that has been subject to so much land slippage in recent years. For more, follow this link to the BBC news web site: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/north_yorkshire/8550186.stm . The tree covered area is part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Click here http://www.natureonthemap.org.uk/map.aspx?map=sssi&feature=1004165,sssi,HYPERLINK,LABEL for a map. Cayton Bay is one of a number of bays south from Scarborough to Reighton that are a series of sweeping, cliff-backed bays. Cayton and Hunmanby Sands are topped with Ampthill Clay and Kimmeridge Clay, Corallian Limestone and Lower Greensand. Cayton Cliff, Tenants' Cliff and the Killerby Cliffs are all unstable, or potentially so, and there has been slumping, although collapsed debris from previous falls protects some areas to an extent. Text adapted from English Heritage document: http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/upload/pdf/Report_238_RCZAS_vol_4_Whitby_to_Reighton_1_224.pdf (Use the PDF browser to search for 'Cayton'). The bungalows on the cliff top in the top right are built on the site of the former NALGO holiday camp and have been the subject of press interest in recent years because of the previously mentioned land slippage.
