The operation of the coil is as follows : The cell current proceedingfrom the carbon pole of the cell traverses the primary coil, and returnsto the cell through the interrupter, the platinum points of the latterbeing in contact. In the act of traversing the coil, this current makesthe core magnetic, which iu turn attracts the small armature on the in-terrupter, breaking the cell current; the magnetism of the core nowhaving disappeared, the spring returns to contact, when the process isagain repeated. On closure of the cell current a reverse inductionarises in the secondary coil, but this rises slowly on account of self-induction between contiguous windings of the primary coil. At theinstant of opening the cell current, a direct current arises in the sec-ondary coil of a much sharper curve of ascent because there is but little Int.
