Text Appearing Before Image:
auses the two ends ofthe side rod to make a very slight anglewith each other. The blue print of amodern 2-6-0 engine is before us, withdistance between leading and maindrivers given as 7 ft. 2 in. and that be-tween rear drivers 8 ft. 6 in. Taking theserod ends as the radii of two circles, it iseasy to sec that any slight lowering ofthe main pin such as would be caused bya track joint, would produce so slight adifference in length of these lines as tobe practically of no importance. Therod end, seven or eight feet long, lies on the hypothenuse of a right-angled triangle, whose base is thetheoretically horizontal line betweentheir center lines, and the verti-cal distance through which the middlewheel has gone down, may be, perhaps,J-i of an inch. In such a case thedifference between the length of the baseand of the hypotenuse is so slight that itmay be disregarded. The pins and signer thinks that the small motor willsave considerable dead weight that ac-companies the use of a locomotive.

To removethe piece of scale, open and shut the airoperated valve several times as quickly andas widely as possible. A sudden gush ofwater may carry it out. If the air opera-ted valve will not close and appears notto be held open with scale, it is possiblethat the cylinder containing the air pistonmay have been subjected to the soft-hammer treatment, and a dint or dingein the thin brass walls will prevent theproper movement of piston. If the caseis not very serious the piston may bemade to travel up and close the air opera-ted valve, by screwing the nut on top outas far as it will go. If this cannot be donethe v.ilve needs overhauling. (49) V. D.
