THE l..\( HINE C.\N.\L SWING SP.\X IX ITS OPEN AND CLOSED POSITIONS in British Columbia. It has invohed theconstruction, some six years ago, of oneof the most interesting systems of tunnelsin existence, and also the construction,now under way, of the longest tunnel onthe continent. We refer in the formerinstance to the spiral tunnels in the valleyof the Kicking Horse River, and in the of 710 tons of freight over this sectionof the main line. For about three milesa grade of 4.5 per cent, prevailed, decreas-ing to 4 and 3.5 per cent, for the re-mainder of the distance. These gradesinvolved the use of spring switches atdifferent points along the line for thepurpose of safety. Unless the engine- necessity. Reference to Fig. 1 will enablethe reader to clearly understand the man-ner in which this was accomplished. Themain line now traverses the valley of theKicking Horse River between these twostations with an increased length of 82miles and a maximum grade of 22 percent, (compensated). 74
