st,fullest lapis-lazuli blue, and turquoise-green. Face, handsand breast, and the tiara, are gilded, in a ripe, subduedtone. The goddess is posed on a base exhibiting the sameglowing glazes as those in which her robes are represented,turquoise-green and lapis, the base being modeled in an un-usual form. Instead of rockery or a lotus throne, thereis here a dragon among swirling waves of the sea. Thebacks of both figure and base are in a deep gold and rich mahogany-brown lacquer effect. Height, 21 y^ inches. No. 180 ANTIQUE CHINESE BIRDCAGES That the following group of birdcages is a remarkable one needs no em-phasis—hardly the statement—for in the first glance is recognition. What isnot instantly perceptible, however, amid the lavishness of the ornamentationbestowed upon them, is the significance, the attention to minute detail, andthe multiplicity, in the varied beauties of this ornamentation. To offer thesuggestion—indeed the assurance—that they may be examined with confidenceof finding at any turn fresh thoughts and imaginative dreams of the artist-workmen who made them is the only purpose of this note.
