Summary
[edit]DescriptionRedshank (Persicaria maculosa) - geograph.org.uk - 1144064.jpg |
English: Redshank (Persicaria maculosa) (Syn. Polygonum persicaria, under which name it is listed in older works.)
"Redshank" may be more familiar as the name of a bird (746572), but it is also the common name of the flowering plant shown here (as well as of a species of moss). The dark spots on the leaves are a distinctive feature, although they are not always quite so prominent as they appear in this photograph. This is a common, native species, shown here growing beside the footpath / cycle route that crosses this field. It is a member of the family Polygonaceae (the Dock Family, also containing bistorts, knotgrasses, etc.; these plants have distinctive sheath-like "ochreae" above the joints of the stem). Compare: 1144114. |
