Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Redwood cones of both the previous year (brown) and current year (green) 27 September 2019 at Humboldt State University. The brown cones will soon fall, attached to their twigs. Seeds within the green cones will continue to ripen, with scales opening in November, such that seeds disperse by wind through the winter. It is rare for any seeds to remain when the old cones finally fall. Their viability depletes rapidly after the winter and spring rains subside. Photo by Connie Barlow.
