There wereseated on each step two or three young fellows,every one of them with his revolver in his hand,and they said to the police: If you want us,come and take us. More troops were summoned,and after long hours of ineffectual parleying, itwas decided to carry the house by assault. Thestorming party formed up in a neighbouring court-yard, and advanced at the double. However, it wasgreeted with volleys of revolver-shots from thewindows and by two bombs, which, if I rememberrightly, killed one officer and mortally woundedanother and several men. The attempt to carrythe building by storm was then abandoned, and itwas decided to bombard it with artillery. The gunswere posted some 200 yards away—out of revolver-shot—and one gun fired a round of shrapnel. Thenthe officer in charge of the troops demanded toknow if they would surrender, but revolver shots

This went on till the gunshad fired about nine rounds, when the defendersof this fort chabrol announced they were willing tosurrender. Numerous people from the neighbour-ing houses were at their front-doors, watching theproceedings and speculating on the result of thegun-fire. As a matter of fact, the damage done bythe shrapnel was really very small. When theshell hit the walls, it made a hole about 2 to 3 feetdeep, with a diameter of about 6 feet, but did notgo through, as the walls are over that thickness.Such shells as entered the windows only burst onstriking tlie inner walls, and nearly all the damagewas done in the adjoining flat, where was amuseum. yVe were naturally most anxious to see thedefenders come out.
