Summary[edit]
DescriptionReigate Castle gateway - geograph.org.uk - 1091363.jpg |
English: Reigate Castle gateway Although built on the site of the former Reigate Castle, it is not part of it - instead it is a folly (grade II listed - see http://www.heritagegateway.org.uk/Gateway/Results_Single.aspx?uid=289374&resourceID=5 for listing particulars), built in 1777 by a Richard Barnes (although the stone used, Reigate stone, was probably scavenged from the castle remains).
There are two inscriptions on it, one in Latin, the other an English translation reading: "To save the memory of William Earl Warren who in old days dwelt here, and was a loyal champion of our liberties from perishing like his own castle by the ravages of time, Richard Barnes at his own expense erected this gateway in the year 1777". (William de Warrenne was the original builder of the castle, in 1088). |
