A Forlorn Hope isthat body of troops which leads in the assault upon astrongly intrenched fortification, where the chances aregreatly against the assaulting forces, and where a greatslaughter is sure to follow whether in success or defeat.The construction or definition of Forlorn Hope asunderstood by those who know, is resolved to die. The echoes of that terrible charge and slaughter ofJuly 18th where so many brave men met their death, stillthrilled every man of the command.
