The whole summit was wreathedwith flames, and a i)erpetual roar was heard. Ever andanon the cone of the volcano was encircled with vividelectric phenomena, amid wliicii a downpour of liquidfire on all sides of the crater was revealed in magnificentawfulness. In the evening there was a frightful shockof earthquake, which was repeated at 2 oclock on Sun-day morning (April 8).
