shortcomings in controland operation. But elevators are constantlyincreasing their mileage, and when this isconsidered it is found that the relative num-ber of accidents is greatly decreased and thatimproved appliances and increased care in(jperation are constantly diminishing the rela-tive number of mishaps for which elevatorsin high buildings must be held responsible. VOLUMIs OF TRAFFIC. WHiile the vertical trip may be short, yetthe volume of traffic is enormous, and in theliorough of Maniiattan appro.ximately 9000passenger elevators and 12,000 freight ele-vators are engaged in the daily transportationof 6.500,000 people. In the six years, 1903-1908, more than 4(X)0 of these machines wereinstalled, and in the period 1903-1907 therewas an increase of rented area of 23,870,006square feet, or about 550 acres, distributedas follows: Business buildings, 9,725,921square feet; lofts and stores, 10,965,837square feet; factories, 3,178,248 square feet. 712 THE AMERICAN REI^/EIV OF REI^/EIVS.
Text Appearing After Image:
MAIN CORRIDOR OF GROUND FLOOR, SINGER BUILDING. (Showing entrance to tower elevators. The lights in the globes overthe doorways automatically indicate the approach of a car and its direc-tion.) carrying a total of 615,000passengers daily, so thatu hen we consider there arein New York City over 500buildings exceeding 125feet in height it is not diffi-cult to realize that the 8000passenger elevators inapartment houses, stores, loft buildings, and officebuildings carry approxi-mately 6,500,000 peopledaily. Rapiditj of travel andthe handling of passengersis more important thanlarge capacity in a passen-ger elevator, except undersuch special conditions asat a subway or elevated sta-tion, so that powerful ma-chines and large sized carsare less useful in officebuildings and large shopsthan a larger number ofsmaller cars. In hydraulicas well as electric elevators, particularly of the direct-traction type, auxiliarj de-vices are available for in-creasing the lifting capacitywhen it is necessary
