But she begsWotan to surround the rock with inextinguishable flames,so that only the bravest of heroes may win her. This hero will be Siegfried, son of Siegmund and Sieg-linda, and grandson of Wotan. Siegfried, whose motherdies at his birth, is brought up by the dwarf Mime, brotherof Alberich, who dreams always of recovering the Nibe-lungen treasure. This treasure is guarded by the giantFafner, transformed into a dragon. The cunning Mime,seeing what marvellous power and courage are developingin Siegfried, quickly comprehends that this descendant ofWotan is alone able to slay Fafner; after which, he, Mime,will soon throw the young hero into a lethargic sleep, and

Mime makes several, and Siegfriedsnaps them all as if they were straws. At last the youngVolsung succeeds in forging an invincible weapon with the fragments of Siegmundssword, which Sieglinda,when dying, had givento Mime at the sametime that she confidedto him her son. Siegfried goes forthto conquer the treasure,but before attacking Faf-ner, he seats himself inthe shade of a linden-tree before his enemyscave, and falls to won-dering about manythings ; he listens to thevoices of the forest, andforgets Fafner in tryingto imitate the songs ofthe birds. At last herouses himself from thissweet revery, and soundsa fanfare upon his silverhorn. At this call, the dragon appears.
