Ofcourse all fruit trees have to struggleagainst the rigors of the Russian climate ;but they, like the other plants and theanimals, have become hardened in theenvironment and quickened in their en-ergies by the limitations of the briefsummer. Apples and pears are pro-duced throughout a great part of the environment. The Russians are nota-ble for many peculiarities of their ethniclife. One of the principal of these isthe strongly agricultural and rural char-acter of the population. Of all theEuropean nations the Russians haveshown least disposition to congregate intowns—the strongest disposition to holdthe country as against the municipality.
