Description
English: Ripples on Paignton Sands After becoming fascinated by the subject while staying at Margate in 1901, Hertha Ayrton produced a paper in 1904 entitled "The Origin and Growth of Ripple-mark", which gives a persuasive argument for the creation of ripples from the oscillating motion of wavelets across the beach. http://cwp.library.ucla.edu/articles/ayrton/Ayrton_ripple/ripple.html "Later this led to study of vortices in fluids, including the Ayrton fan, a hand-operated device for deflecting waves of poison gases from the trenches of First World War." http://www.aps.org/programs/women/reports/gazette/upload/99s.pdf
