West, he abandoned paintingin 1793, and devoting himself to engineering, evolved the Clermont, forerunner ofsteamboats, which made a successful trip from New York to Albany on Aug. 19, 1807.Born at Little Britain, Pa., 1765; died at New York, Feb. 24. 1815.
