West, he abandoned paintingin 1793, and devoting himself to engineering, evolved the Clermont, forerunner ofsteamboats, which made a successful trip from New York to Albany on Aug. 19, 1807.Born at Little Britain, Pa., 1765; died at New York, Feb. 24. 1815. From a paintingby Chappel. Catalogue of Exhibition 265 of song and drama. The account of her saving Smiths life appearson p. 49, and a list of the first settlers of Virginia on p. 43. Ownedby Hon. John Boyd Thacher, Albany. I. 1-1. Quilt. It was made in sections or squares by the wivesof Members of the Colonial Congress to help them pass the hourswhile their husbands were deciding the Nations destiny, each wifemaking one section, and finally joining them together about a centralone made by Martha Washington.
