Summary
[edit]DescriptionRock Common Quarry - geograph.org.uk - 990968.jpg |
English: Rock Common Quarry The name is actually a bit of a misnomer, the origins of Rock come from "atter oke" or at the oak and has been linguistically morphed into the current name over the centuries of language change and mispronunciation. The quarry itself is built on a lower greensand outcrop and has been extensively worked since 1915 for sand and is currently owned by Tarmac. When the quarry is exhausted the owners want to turn it into a landfill site as it did with the workings north of The Hollow. However, the local villagers would like to see it turned back into a nature reserve. Taken from the footpath that runs from The Pike to The Hollow and skirts the eastern and northern boundary of the quarry. |
