I was having a nice long-drawn-outargument with a wily old trout who hadhis lair near a tangled mass of roots,when a shout of triumph drew my atten-tion to Bersa. There she stood, amongthe marguerites and buttercups, her dearlittle sunburnt face radiant with honestpride and happiness, holding in her handsher first trout. It was the finest trout of the morningso far, too—a beauty—and best of allshe had got him from the pool at whichshe had remained so patiently—truly aproper acknowledgement by the fates ofjuvenile constancy.
