Itis not that the builders were ignorant, becausethey used the decorative orders in the amphi-theater and in the Porta Praetoria. The reason for these buttresses and for cer-tain other peculiarities, especially the triple rowof windows and the inclosed portico behind thescena, is that we have here the rare form of thecovered theater, the theatrum tectum. In a fewcases, as at Pompeii, a small covered theater wasbuilt to supplement the usual larger uncoveredtheater. Here at Aosta, with its severe northernclimate, the covered theater was adopted abso-lutely. So, while the fa9ade of the Pompeianexample measures but twenty-seven meters, thisat Aosta is nearly double, with its forty-eightmeters.
