Title
Roman copper alloy seal box lid
Description
English: A copper-alloy seal-box lid of Roman date. The lid is rectangular in plan and bears a fine enamelled 'celtic' design in its upper surface. This design comprises two joined trumpet-headed swirls of foliage, back-to-back, opposing one another. These springs of foliage are surrounded by recessed fields filled that would have contained enamel; degraded brown coloured enamel remains in some areas around the swirls. The trumpet heads are filled with a degraded yellow coloured enamel. The design is contained within a perimeter ridge. Extending outwards from each of the two upper corners is an angled lobe. Between these lobes, located centrally, is the damaged hinge consisting of a single perforated lug with a flattened bottom edge. The vertical sides extend downwards from the top. At the centre of the each of the two long sides is a rectangular cut out, into which the binding chord would have fitted.

A compete seal-box bearing bearing a very similar lid was found in excavations at Wroxeter (Barker et al. 1997: 197 (fig. 299), no. 2). The decorative content these pieces suggests a 1st century date. A similar example but with different coloured enamelling from Watlington, Oxfordshire is recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme Database as BH-1B1C46.
