lindens were in full flower. Littledaisies made specks of brightness on the springy, swarded banks of a lazy brook, where willowsdrooped over drowsing lily-pads. There were rose-bushes as tall as Frederick Williams grenadiers, who used to grow vegetables on the very spot wherea goat-footed marble Marsyas now capered gaily tosave his skin, among clouds of lilac and great, bloom-ing fruit-trees. A lion and a tiger, both on the verge ofpurring, watch you as you climb toward an archsurmounted by the most genial eagle in the world.Beside the main fountain there is a statue of Marsshying a little javelin. His dog-like wolf is joy-ously on the bound to retrieve it, and you fancy thatthe man of might is about to wink at Mercury, whois placidly tying his winged shoes over beyond t
