Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Ruined monastery church at Capel-y-ffin Joseph Leycester Lyne, better known as Father Ignatius, was an Anglican lay reader intent on re-introducing monasticism into the Church of England. In 1869, having failed to buy Llanthony Priory, he acquired a land here on which he and his followers built a monastery and this church. The monks did much of the building themselves but their enthusiasm was not matched by their skill and the structure became unsafe and fell into ruins. Father Ignatius died in 1908 and is buried under the chancel. The monks transferred to Caldey Island and thence to Prinknash in Glos. turning to Catholicism along the way.
