Summary[edit]
DescriptionRuins of Y Storws on the western shore of Cemlyn Bay - geograph.org.uk - 1218538.jpg |
English: Ruins of Y Storws on the western shore of Cemlyn Bay From the late 18thC century until the 1930s, Y Storws (=The Storehouse)had an important role in the local economy. The sheds and cottages were built by Shadrach Williams who, in 1780, was granted a three generation lease on the lands of Fronddu Farm by the landowners, the Meyrick family of Bodorgan. The sheds were used for storing grain purchased by Shadrach and his descendants from neighbouring farmers prior to its shipping, mainly to Liverpool. Its yard was used for the storage of imported coal which would be sold to households of the area. In addition timber for building was imported and copper ore and marble exported. Shadrach Williams' daughter, Ann, and her husband, Thomas Owen, a ship's master lived in one of the cottages on the site. Thomas was captured off Land's End by the French and held prisoner at Verdun until 1814 despite two attempts to ransom him. He died shortly after being released and is buried at nearby Llanrhwydrus Churchyard. |
