English: Stop motion animated video.
Although popularly considered to be some kind of fertility amulet or goddess statue, there are alternative theories on what the Venus of Willendorf’s original nature really was. In 2009 archaeologist Nicholas Conard published an article in Nature journal proposing that the Venus figurines were more likely to have been objects of erotica, created for sexual arousal purposes. This idea was picked up by the popular media and reported on using, among other headlines, the terms "prehistoric pinup" and "precursor to playboy". In 2012, in an interview with New Scientist entitled “ ‘Palaeo-porn’: we’ve got it all wrong”, archaeologist April Nowell argued that although all Venus theories are equally speculative, it was irresponsible of Conard to use the term "pornography" because it “allows journalists and researchers, evolutionary psychologists in particular, to legitimise and naturalise contemporary western values and behaviours by tracing them back to the mist of prehistory”. Undeniably, the hyper feminisation of the Venus figurines - huge boobs, protuding labial lips – seems to echo in the sculpted human pornstars of today. Also Venus is fat and faceless and I love that. |
