| Description | While watching the traffic in San Francisco Bay, my eye was drawn to this striking vessel. My first thought was, "Gosh. That looks like an old Coast Guard Cutter. Maybe something from the 1930s or 1940s." Scary. It actually IS an old Coast Guard Cutter. It is the former USCGC Electra. The Electra was built for the Coast Guard in 1934 in Manitowoc, WI. It was converted in 1936 to the USS Potomac, a presidential yacht operated by the US Navy for Franklin D. Roosevelt. It served as his yacht until his death in 1945. It is now a museum/tour boat. I guess next time in the area, I'll have to go and check it out! |
