Across the Bay from Gibraltar basks the pleasant little Spanish town of Algeciras, which waited untilthe early twentieth century to attain political significance. Yet it was founded by the Moors in 713.This is the Moorish aqueduct of nearby Los Barrios. Otherdevices, such as changing the level and thenmodifying the slope, and siphon arrange-ments of various kinds, were adopted (as inthe aqueduct at Aspendus). Aqua Appia, 11 miles long, all but300 feet below ground. It was constructed in312 B. C. by the censor Appius ClaudiusCaecus. Apparently it was Romes first aque-duct. 2.
